Design Information
In 2017, the U.S. Navy released a statement, saying, “owing to the unique demands of strategic relevance, SSBN(X)s must be fitted with the most up-to-date capabilities and stealth to ensure they are survivable throughout their full 40-year life span.” Some design elements have since been talked about since 2012. Included, among other things, were X-shaped stern control surfaces (hydroplanes), Sail-mounted dive planes, and an Electric drive.

What Is Electric Drive?
Knowing what something like an Electric Drive is, is not a guarantee. This is tricky stuff. The Electric Drive is a propulsion system in which a vessel’s propeller is moved by an electric motor. It’s really a part of a larger concept aimed at developing an all-electric ship. Submarines that use this element are said to have a lower life-cycle cost and a lower acoustic signature. From the 1900s-1950s, the Turbo-electric drive was used on US capital ships.
