The SSBN-X Columbia-class sub was often referred to as the Ohio Replacement sub. Now it is established in its own right and is an upcoming class of nuclear subs for the U.S. Navy. The UGM-133 Trident II–armed Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines are due to be displaced by this mega submarine. The release of this will see the remaining vessels be decommissioned, however.

From the year 2027, we will see one of these submarines be decommissioned annually. After this, the Columbia class will take on the responsibility of submarine presence in the US strategic nuclear force. The US Navy has the intention to purchase twelve of the new subs. Each of these will then be equipped with sixteen missile tubes, with each one having the capacity of carrying one  Trident II D5LE missile. We have to take other factors into account however, when building a submarine just like this one.
