Billie has performed around 100 missions during his military service. He had been awarded the opportunity and permission to come home, and the month of July 1944 was set aside for this. Billie appears to have been ecstatic and entirely overtaken with happiness when he learned that he will be returning to his much-loved wife. Destiny, on the other hand, had other intentions. Billie was about to board a ship packed with injured service members in need of medical attention. Because there was no room on the ship for another service member, he was forced to stand aside so that his fellow passengers may return to the United States before him. It would be several weeks before another ship arrived, and he would have to wait once more. The day had finally arrived for Billie to begin his journey back home, but he was told yet again that he would have to wait. This one occurrence marked a watershed moment in Billie’s life…
