During the tumultuous time, Peggy did everything she could to understand as much as she could about what was going on. It was utterly unfathomable why he hadn’t written to her for such a long time. The pair had originally gotten to know and courted one other through letters; there was no need for him to discontinue interacting with her in this way at this time. The military was completely anarchic, and everything was badly disorganized. Peggy received word from the Army’s Supreme Head Quarters in France that her husband would be returning to the United States soon. The story turned out to be incorrect, and she quickly realized that if she wanted to contact him again, she would have to do so on her own initiative.

The entire procedure felt like a whirlwind of emotions, and there was no hint that it would end soon. On the seventh of July, Peggy got word through telegram that Billie had gone missing. Peggy sobbed, but she quickly stood up and decided she was going to find out the truth about what had happened. Peggy had a feeling something wasn’t quite right, so she read the telegram numerous times before recognizing it included incorrect information. She received handwritten letters from Billie that were dated after the telegram was dispatched; the letters made it clear that he was still alive and well. Peggy wasted no time and dashed to the telegraph office, where she was welcomed by a message alerting her that the date was erroneous and that Billie had, in fact, gone missing on July 17th. Something in her instincts warned her that something was wrong…
