Alice Ghostley featured in 15 episodes of Bewitched as Esmerelda, the housekeeper. She was initially cast to play unpleasant neighbor Mrs. Kravitz, replacing the late Alice Pearce. When Ghostley was invited to join the show in the aftermath of Marion Lorne’s death, she was nervous about filling her friend’s shoes. Producer Bill Asher told her that Esmerelda would be a figure comparable to Aunt Clara, not a direct replacement.
